1-to-1 Speech-Language Therapy Services

Our speech therapy services are designed to help students improve their communication skills. Our highly qualified speech-language therapists will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to assess the child’s speech and language abilities, identify any speech or language disorders, and develop a personalized treatment plan. We offer individualized therapy sessions that focus on developing communication skills, improving articulation, building vocabulary, and enhancing language comprehension. We also provide education and training to parents and caregivers on how to support their child’s communication development at home.

Curriculum

A wide array of skills is required for reading and writing to be meaningful. Children with poor reading comprehension skills often encounter one or more areas of difficulty in literacy and/or language. This may include poor word recognition skills which comprises phonological awareness (i.e. understanding of phonemes/phonics) and sight word recognition (i.e. recognizing non-phonetic words), and poor skills in understanding background knowledge, vocabulary, sentence structure, and reasoning.

We understand that it can be overwhelming for parents and educators to target multiple challenging areas at once. A fine balance is imperative to carefully stack the building blocks of learning in order to support our children in creating their own castles and kingdoms. To help you with this, The Literacy Lab provides specially designed curriculum that targets different areas of need. They can be used individually to work on specific areas, and then integratively, in a manner that allows your child to consolidate and generalise his/her skills across different tasks.

The Literacy Lab’s way allows your child to first develop the separate core skills required, then receive ample practice at using them together bit by bit, before being confronted by a task that requires multiple skills to be used at the same time. This ensures that their learning is set at the right level of challenge that allows them to learn new skills without becoming too overwhelmed.

We offer the curriculum over the following domains:

  1. Reading Comprehension
  2. Narative Storytelling
  3. Punctuation
  4. Synthesis (using conjunctions)

The skill of Critical thinking is embedded in all of our programs.

Educator/Parent Training

The Literacy Lab’s literacy trainings for educators and parents are led by speech-language therapists who are certified by The Literacy Lab. We provide our trainings within a comfortable, small-group setting, instilling in our participants the knowledge, skills, and tools, they need to make learning literacy fun, engaging, and meaningful for their children.

Summer Workshops

Our Reading Comprehension & Storytelling holiday workshop is a 3-day long programme (3 hours per day split between the 2 domains, with a 20mins break in between).

Story Telling
Story telling requires a combination of multiple skills used integratively. Our workshop breaks down this complex process and equips students with the tools and skills to construct their own narratives. Our students will learn how to:

  • Identify the different elements in a story.
  • Generate and synthesise story elements.
  • Sequence story elements in a smooth and logical manner.
  • Construct simple and complex sentence structures
  • Learn and use varied and meaningful vocabulary.
  • Perform and express a learnt story.
  • Innovate, edit, and perform a learnt story.

Reading Comprehension
In school, our students are required to synthesise verbal and written information in order to answer high level questions. Our workshop develops these skills from the bottom up, ensuring that your child achieves each preceding skill in order to maximise success! Our students will learn how to:

  • Differentiate basic questions types. Answer direct questions
  • Use prior knowledge to make smart guesses
  • Answer prediction and inference questions
  • Identify similarities and differences
  • Answer compare and contrast questions
  • Identify inciting incidents and reasons.
  • Understand cause and effect Identify inciting incidents and reasons
  • Answer “why” questions

Benefits

Our children will be equipped with storytelling and thinking skills which will help them to navigate and excel in academic and social tasks. They will get a head start in training these skills for school success.

The parents of our children will learn skills alongside their children through our handouts and home practice sheets. This helps them to continue to support their children’s learning and progress way after the workshops are over. Parents will also be equipped to apply the same skills to their other children to help them succeed in school.

Our partner schools will benefit from a value-added service to benefit their students and parents. The essential skills taught over our programme will help graduating students to absorb and learn your curriculum better.

Our next workshop is from 17-19 Jul at The Vista An Phu, Ho Chi Minh City. Alternatively, you may contact us to register your interest in the workshop and we may plan one for you!
