Our Founders

Literacy Lab is helmed by two Singaporean speech-language therapists. We have a combined experience of 14 years in providing intervention to children in the areas of speech, language, literacy, and communication.

We are passionate about developing the functionality of each domain of learning, such that our students can apply learnt skills to their everyday lives meaningfully. Aside from academic learning within the classrooms, we seek to empower our students to be clear and thoughtful communicators, critical thinkers and effective writers.

We have a robust knowledge of language development, the Singapore curriculum, and specialised skills in imparting the craft of language and literacy. These help us to support your children’s learning in an enjoyable and measurable way. We also cut out the guess work for you, and provide a step-by-step programme to guide your children in their learning.

Jia Tan (Tan Jia Hui) SLP
About Me

Jia is a Singaporean Speech-Language Therapist who specialises in language and literacy intervention. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and conversant in Japanese. She has over 9 years of experience as a Speech-Language therapist and more than 17 years of experience working with children with special needs.

As a frequent contributor to various publications in Asia including the Straits Times (Singapore), English Plus (Japan) and Bazaar magazine (Kuwait), she realised that many of her clients were not able to similarly partake in the joy of reading and writing due to reading comprehension and expressive language difficulties.

This ignited her interest in language and literacy, prompting her to receive training in the following language and literacy centred approaches:

  • Lindamood Bell Talkies Programme
  • Lindamood Bell Visualizing and Verbalizing Programme
  • Nurturing Narratives
  • Sounds Write Program
  • Dialogic Reading

To share her knowledge, Jia has also conducted numerous workshops for schools, parents and teachers to educate and share strategies to help them support their children in their natural environments. Some workshops/trainings she has conducted are:

  • Dialogic Reading
  • Build-a-story (A narrative workshop)
  • Differentiating English as an Additional Language from Developmental Language Disorders
  • Embedding language and literacy in home routines

Jia has a passion for empowering parents and teachers to provide a comprehensive intervention that allows children to continue growing outside of the therapy-setting. She believes that the joy of literacy should be within everyone’s reach by using fun and meaningful activities.
