Our Philosophy

At The Literacy Lab, we believe that every lesson should be fun, engaging, meaningful and evidence-based.

This means that each session should be packed full of action that connects our students with a purpose. Children have to leave their seats, help with the props, take on the roles of the characters and come up with their own scripts. In essence, because they are fully-immersed in engaging with the content and stories, learning just happens naturally.

Of course, we don’t want our children to merely have fun (though that isn’t a bad way to spend 2 hours each week!). We want the learning to be meaningful to their lives. By weaving drama into literacy instruction, we equip our students with essential skills that they can use across academic and social environments. The group problem solving and collaboration opportunities give them the skills to develop enriching social lives. Exposure to new vocabulary words and sentence structures from different points of views will improve their communication skills and develop their perspective taking abilities. Enhanced reading and writing skills through our programme, will add to their academic success and open doors to further learning. After all, learning is most meaningful when it can effect change in a person’s life!

Finally, we want all that we do to be based on evidence. Drama itself, has decades of research, backing its utility in improving language, reading, writing and social skills. By using drama as a medium to learn reading, writing and social communication, we seek to help our children to grow holistically. We love that our program has all that it takes to make a real difference to young lives; because when learning is  fun, that’s when the magic truly happens.
